What are Cement Nails?

Cement nails are a specialist fastener category manufactured from high-carbon hardened steel, giving them the hardness and toughness required to penetrate concrete and masonry without bending or shattering.

Standard construction nails cannot be driven into masonry; they buckle immediately. Cement nails are specifically heat-treated to achieve a hardness typically exceeding HRC 50°, which is what allows them to bite into hard substrates under hammer force alone.

Most cement nails used in Australian construction are fluted; the shank features spiral or straight grooves along its length that grip the surrounding masonry as the nail is driven, preventing pull-out. This fluted design is what makes cement nails reliable as a permanent fastener in concrete and block.

They are sold by weight (typically 500g or 1kg packs) across a range of lengths and diameters to suit different applications and substrate thicknesses.

What are Cement Nails Used For?

Cement nails are used wherever timber or another material needs to be fixed directly to a masonry surface without mechanical anchors or adhesive. They are a fast, cost-effective fastening solution for a wide range of construction and renovation applications.

Fixing Timber Plates to Concrete Slabs

The most common application for cement nails in residential construction is fixing bottom plates and floor battens to concrete slabs. Rather than drilling and plugging, a cement nail driven through the timber and into the slab provides a quick, permanent fix for non-structural plate work.

Formwork and Temporary Fixing

Cement nails are widely used in formwork construction to fix timber to existing concrete or block walls temporarily. Their holding power is sufficient for the loads involved, and the fluted shank can be extracted with a claw hammer once the formwork is no longer needed, though extraction does take effort.

Furring Strips and Battens

Attaching furring strips and timber battens to brick or block walls is a classic cement nail application used in wall cladding, plasterboard lining systems, and timber panelling installations. Cement nails provide a reliable mechanical fix without requiring chemical anchors or plug fixings.

In low-load applications, such as fixing non-loadbearing stud frames to existing masonry walls, cement nails are an economical and effective fastener, particularly where the block or brick substrate is of medium strength and allows nail penetration without fracturing.

General Building and Site Work

On active building sites, cement nails are a go-to fastener for hundreds of small fixing tasks: securing site fencing to block walls, attaching temporary boards, fixing stop ends, and pinning materials to existing masonry during construction.

How to Drive Cement Nails Correctly

Cement nails require more force than standard nails and a slightly different technique. Follow these steps for a clean, reliable fix:

  1. Select the correct nail length. The nail should penetrate the masonry substrate by at least 25mm beyond the material being fixed.
  2. Use a framing hammer (heavier than a standard claw hammer); the extra mass makes a significant difference when driving into hard concrete.
  3. Hold the nail firmly and start with controlled, moderate strikes to set the nail point into the surface before swinging harder.
  4. Drive the nail in one continuous session. If you stop mid-drive and the nail is not fully home, the surrounding concrete may harden around the shank and resist further movement.
  5. If the nail stops before the head reaches the surface and will not move further, do not continue hammering. Remove it, reposition, and try again. Continuing to strike a stalled nail will shatter it or damage the substrate.
  6. Always wear eye protection when driving cement nails; fragments of hardened steel or masonry can be ejected under hammer impact.

Tip: For cleaner results in denser concrete, pre-drill a pilot hole with a masonry bit slightly smaller than the nail shank. This reduces the risk of the substrate cracking or the nail deflecting on impact.

For high-load or structural connections to concrete, a drilled anchor or concrete screw is the correct choice. For speed on medium-duty work (e.g. plates, battens, furring, formwork) cement nails are hard to beat.

What are Cement Nails Not Suitable For?

Cement nails should not be used in high-strength reinforced concrete where the nail cannot penetrate adequately, forcing a nail into a substrate that is too hard will cause it to shatter, with a real risk of injury from ejected fragments.

They are not designed for structural load-bearing connections. Where the connection needs to transfer significant shear or tensile loads, use drilled mechanical anchors rated to the required load.

Cement nails are also not suitable for fixing into cracked, spalling, or deteriorated masonry; the substrate needs to be sound and solid for the nail to grip properly.

Yes, but it takes effort. Use the claw of a framing hammer or a nail bar to extract them. If the concrete has set tightly around the shank, the fastener may need to be driven through rather than pulled back. Plan fixing locations carefully before driving.

What is the difference between fluted and smooth shank masonry nails?

Fluted nails have grooves along the shank that grip the surrounding masonry as the nail is driven, providing significantly better pull-out resistance than a smooth shank. For most fixing applications, such as plates, battens, furring, fluted is the correct choice.
