What is Geotextile Fabric?

Geotextile fabric, also called geofabric, geo-tech fabric, or filter fabric, is a robust, permeable textile manufactured from polypropylene or polyester fibres. It is engineered to perform a specific structural function in the ground: separating layers of soil, aggregate, or fill while allowing water to pass freely through.

Non-woven geotextile fabric (the most common type for landscaping and drainage applications) is made by bonding or needle-punching synthetic fibres into a felt-like sheet. This gives it excellent filtration properties and flexibility across a wide range of ground conditions.

Geotextile fabric does not rot, rust, or degrade under normal soil conditions. Once installed, it performs its function for the life of the structure.

What is Geotextile Fabric Used For?

Geotextile fabric is used wherever two different materials need to stay separated underground (typically soil and aggregate) while allowing groundwater to drain freely. It is one of the most versatile materials in civil construction and landscaping.

Drainage Trenches

Geotextile fabric is installed in drainage trenches before aggregate or pipe is laid. It lines the walls and base of the trench, preventing surrounding soil from migrating into the gravel aggregate and blocking drainage over time. This is the most common application in residential landscaping across Sydney.

Retaining Walls

Behind retaining walls, geofabric drainage fabric wraps the drainage aggregate, keeping soil from mixing into the gravel and clogging the drainage layer. This is critical to the long-term performance and structural integrity of the retaining wall.

Tip: Line the back face of the retaining wall with geotextile fabric before backfilling with drainage aggregate; overlap seams by at least 300mm.

Subgrade Separation

In driveways, paths, and paved areas, geotextile fabric is laid between the natural ground and the road base aggregate. It prevents the two from mixing under load and traffic, which keeps the sub-base stable and extends the life of the surface.

Erosion Control

On slopes, embankments, and disturbed ground, geotextile fabric is used as a surface cover to protect against erosion from rain and runoff while the site stabilises or revegetation is established.

Raised Garden Beds and Planter Lining

Geotextile fabric is commonly used to line the base and sides of raised garden beds, keeping quality soil in while allowing excess moisture to drain. It prevents weed growth from below without blocking water movement.

Woven vs Non-Woven Geotextile: What's the Difference?

Non-woven geotextile is made from bonded or needle-punched fibres. It has excellent filtration and drainage properties, making it the right choice for most drainage, garden, landscaping, and erosion control applications. This is the type most commonly used in residential and commercial landscaping.

Woven geotextile is made from interlaced fibres, giving it greater tensile strength. It is better suited to load-bearing applications where reinforcement is the primary function, such as beneath heavy road base layers or in civil earthworks. For most landscape and building drainage applications, non-woven is the correct product.

What is Geotextile Fabric Not Suitable For?

Geotextile fabric is not a waterproofing membrane. It allows water to pass through, because that is its function. If you need to stop water movement entirely (for example, beneath a pond, in a tanking application, or as a vapour barrier), you need a different product.

It is also not suitable as a weed mat substitute in areas with prolonged UV exposure above ground, since standard geotextile fabric is formulated for buried applications.

Geotextile Fabric for Retaining Walls in Sydney

If you're building or restoring a retaining wall anywhere across the Sydney metro area, geotextile fabric is an essential part of the drainage layer. Without it, the drainage aggregate behind the wall will eventually fill with fines from the surrounding soil, reducing drainage efficiency and increasing hydrostatic pressure on the wall.
